ABOUT YDS
Yenyen De Sarapen is an Independent | Independence Mascot - a mascot of the oppressed, a body for the disempowered. The brainchild of performance-maker Adrienne Vergara who spent years working as a professional mascoteer in Hongkong Disneyland The Golden Mickeys (2005-2009), Hello Kitty Cruise for Star Cruises (Malaysia & Thailand), and Adventure Time (Dubai & Qatar).Yenyen de Sarapen explores the nature of Character Performance (popularly known as "Mascoteering") and the need for modern day heroes.
YDS revolutionizes the identities and preconceived notions of what a Costumed Character is. From questioning the identity of a Character Performer as an enlarged version of the self, to the critical detachment of the mascot to its roots of conception, the characteristics of Yenyen de Sarapen are framed to offer discourses on hegemony, social responsibility, accountability, and a sense of pathos.
Yenyen de Sarapen, premiered in Karnabal Festival 2015. YDS, the first independent mascot, has performed in Zürcher Theater Spektakel (Zurich, Switzerland), and Asia TOPA Festival XO State Dark (Melbourne, Australia), and NEOFilipinos: 15 Minutes of Your Time and Pasinaya Festival (CCP). Sailor Yenyen was exhibited in Almost There at the University of the Philippines Vargas Museum curated by Patrick Flores with The Japan Foundation, Manila.
